The Brunel Shopping Centre Wins Sceptre Award

The awards recognises how the Brunel’s facilities management team have improved recycling and waste management

The Brunel Shopping Centre was awarded with the Waste Management Award at this year’s Sceptre Awards, which acknowledge the best practice and the best people in the shopping centre industry.

The award recognises the effort of the facilities management team in the centre to improving working practices when it comes to recycling and waste reduction.

Over the past six months, The Brunel has taken multiple measures and invested time and funding into resolving both issues.

This includes increasing diversions from landfills from 85% to 97% since June 2017, incorporating 16 single-source recycling streams, which includes a bespoke bench to segregate steel and aluminium cans and investing in additional recycling cages and extra balers.

As well as a focus within the centre, The Brunel has also made efforts to increase awareness in the community regarding waste management. Engaging with local primary schools and inviting the wider community to litter picking with the local councils cleaning teams are just two examples of these efforts.

Jane Stewart, Deputy General Manager of The Brunel Shopping Centre, said: “I am immensely proud of the team here and the effort they have made to engage tenants and the community in our waste management initiatives, all of which have reaped improvements in segregation, amount recycled and engagement.”
